What is web hosting?Web hosting is publishing your pages on the World Wide Web. The files containing your text and images are placed onto a web server. The server is then configured to display the files when they are requested.

What is a domain?
A domain is the name of your website, for example www.yourcompany.com or www.your-company.com. If you don’t have a domain name you will need to register one.

What is the difference between dedicated and shared/ virtual hosting
With a dedicated hosting plan your website is the only one on the server. The performance will be better but this will be at a premium price. With shared/virtual hosting you will be one of hundreds of others sharing the resources of a single computer.

Can I keep my domain name if I want to move my hosting to another company?
Yes you can. You will however need to move your files and change the pointer for your domain. You will also have to set up all of the email accounts on the new host.

Does it matter if use a windows or Macintosh computer?
No it doesn’t matter. Your website will be made of images, and HTML files which work with either system. If you are using programming like ASP or PHP you will need to make sure your hosting company can accommodate these languages.

How do I get my files to the hosting service?
Some hosting plans will come with a web based control panel that will allow you to move files. Usually though you will need an FTP client to move files. You can acquire a low cost or free FTP client from any of the major shareware/download services. This will allow you to move multiple files at a time.
